Hip hop

Hip hop or hip-hop , is a culture and art movement developed in the Bronx in New York City during the late 1970s. The origins of the word are often disputed. It is also argued as to whether hip hop started in the South or West Bronx . [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] While the term hip hop is often used to refer exclusively to hip hop music (also called rap ), [6] hip hop is characterized by nine elements, of which only four elements are considered essential to understand hip hop musically. The main elements of hip hop consist of four main pillars. Afrika Bambaataa of the hip hop collective Zulu Nation outlined the pillars of hip hop culture, coining the terms: " rapping " (also called MC or Microphone Commander), a rhythmic vocal rhyming style (orality); DJing (and turntablism ), which is making music with record players and DJ mixers (aural/sound and music creation); b-boying/b-girling/ breakdancing (movement/dance); and graffiti art . [7] [2] [8] [9] [10] Other elements of hip hop subculture and arts movements beyond the main four are: hip hop culture and historical knowledge of the movement (intellectual/philosophical); beatboxing , a percussive vocal style; street entrepreneurship ; hip hop language; and hip hop fashion and style, among others. [11] [12] [13] The fifth element is commonly considered either street knowledge, hip hop fashion , or beatboxing ; however, it is often debated. [2] [7]

Hip hop is a subcultural art movement that was formed during the early 1970s primarily by Puerto Rican and African-American youths [1] residing in the South Bronx in New York City . [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] Art historian Robert Farris Thompson describes the demographics of the youth that characterize the South Bronx in the early 1970s as "English-speaking blacks from Barbados" like Grandmaster Flash , "black Jamaicans" like Kool DJ Herc , "thousands of Nuyoricans," who introduced the rhythms from Salsa (music), as well as Afro conga and bonga drums, as well as many who emulated the sounds of Tito Puente and Willie Colón with existing styles of musical styles from jazz to funk associated with African Americans prior to the 1970s. [1] Hip hop music became popular outside of the African-American community in the late 1980s. After the rise of new media platforms and Web 2.0 technology of the Internet, fans would primarily consume the musical genre through social networking sites (SNS) beginning with MySpace evolving to notable mobile apps like YouTube , Worldstarhiphop, SoundCloud, and Spotify . Hip hop or hip-hop is a sub-cultural movement that formed during the early 1970s largely by African American youths residing in the South Bronx in New York City . [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] It became popular outside of the African American community in the late 1980s and by the 2010s became the most listened-to musical genre in the world. [7] It is characterized by four distinct elements, all of which represent the different manifestations of the culture: rap music (oral), turntablism or DJing (aural), b-boying (physical) and graffiti art (visual). Even while it continues to develop globally in myriad styles, these four foundational elements provide coherence to hip hop culture. [3] The term is often used in a restrictive fashion as synonymous only with the oral practice of rap music. [8]

Hip hop is a broad conglomerate of artistic forms that originated within a marginalized subculture in the South Bronx and Harlem amongst black and Latino youth during the 1970s in New York City . [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] It is characterized by four distinct elements, all of which represent the different manifestations of the culture: rap music (oral), turntablism or "DJing" (aural), breaking (physical) and graffiti art (visual). Despite their contrasting methods of execution, they find unity in their common association to the poverty and violence underlying the historical context that birthed the culture. It was as a means of providing a reactionary outlet from such urban hardship that "Hip Hop" initially functioned, a form of self-expression that could reflect upon, proclaim an alternative to, try and challenge or merely evoke the mood of the circumstances of such an environment. Even while it continues in contemporary history to develop globally in a flourishing myriad of diverse styles, these foundational elements provide stability and coherence to the culture. [1] The term is frequently used mistakenly to refer in a confining fashion to the mere practice of rap music .

Hip hop as a cultural movement incorporates B-boying (breakdancing), graffiti writing, DJing and MCeeing. It originates in the African American , Afro-Caribbean and Latino American communities of New York City (with the South Bronx as the center) in the late 1970s . [1] [1] [2] [3] [3] It was DJ Afrika Bambaataa that outlined the five pillars of hip-hop culture: MCing , DJing , breaking , graffiti writing , and knowledge. [4] [5] [6] [7] Other elements include beatboxing , hip hop fashion , and slang . Since first emerging in the Bronx , the lifestyle of hip hop culture has spread around the world. [8] When hip hop music began to emerge, it was based around disc jockeys who created rhythmic beats by looping breaks (small portions of songs emphasizing a percussive pattern) on two turntables, which is now more commonly referred to as sampling. This was later accompanied by "rapping" (a rhythmic style of chanting or poetry more formally in 16 bar measures or time frames) and beatboxing, a vocal technique mainly used to imitate percussive elements of the music and various technical effects of hip hop DJs. An original form of dancing and particular styles of dress arose among followers of this new music. These elements experienced considerable refinement and development over the course of the history of the culture.

The term hip hop (also spelled "hip-hop" or "hiphop") refers both to a musical (see hip hop music ) and cultural genre or movement ( hip hop culture ) that was developed predominantly by African Americans and Puerto Rican in urban communities, starting in the 1970s . [1] Since first emerging in New York City in the seventies, hip hop has grown to encompass not just rapping , but an entire lifestyle that consistently incorporates diverse elements of ethnicity , technology, art and urban life . There are four fundamental elements in hip hop: bboying (commonly misconstrued as breakdancing ), urban inspired art (notably graffiti ), DJing and MCing .
